Job Purpose:

To control the building process by doing inspections in terms of the National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act, 1977 (Act 103 of 1977) as well any other related legislation, to initiate the law enforcement process and to assist the building public with advice.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Diploma in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architecture, Building Management, Building Science, Building Surveying or Quantity Surveying as per national Building Regulations. NQF Level 6.
  • Relevant experience in Building Control and related regulatory processes.
  • At least 1 year experience in similar environment.
  • Valid Driver’s license (Code 8).

Core Responsibilities:

  • Inspect building work to ensure compliance with approved building plans, the National Building Regulations and Building Standards Acts and other applicable legislation.
  • Assess building plans and provide recommendations on compliance with the applicable building standards and regulations
  • Conduct required inspections, including foundations, drainage, floor levels, roof structures and completed buildings
  • Monitor building work and identify and address non-compliance, unsafe structures and unauthorised building activities.
  • Issue contravention notices and follow up on corrective measures and enforcement actions where necessary.
  • Provide advice to property owners, developers, professionals and the public on building requirements, inspections and compliance.
  • Process and provide recommendations on Certificates of Occupancy, building use and demolition applications in accordance with applicable legislation
  • Maintain accurate records and statistics of inspections, contraventions and other building control activities.
  • Ensure that instructions issued by the Municipality in terms of building control legislation are implemented.
  • Promote safe, compliant and orderly development and provide professional customer service to all stakeholders.
